Overview

About Scorhill Stone Circle

Why stop

  • A substantial, uneven ring in a distinctive open-moorland setting.

Heads up

  • Narrow lanes and a rough moorland approach make this a real walk.
If you like prehistoric remains, this is a rewarding close-up; if you’re after a quick roadside stop, the access makes it a bigger commitment than the circle itself. The approach is part of the appeal. A recommended route from Batworthy Corner goes by Round Pound, drops to the North Teign, crosses Teign-e-ver and Wallabrook clapper bridges, then follows a grass track uphill to the stones. You’re pairing the monument with a moorland walk and old river crossings, rather than stepping out of the car beside it. Counts of fallen and surviving stones vary between accounts, so there’s no point trying to match a precise total on site; the ring’s different heights and scattered stones are more interesting than an inventory.

Getting there and looking around

The final lanes toward Batworthy are narrow, and its small parking area needs to keep the school-bus turning circle clear. The approach is rocky and can become boggy after wet weather. Treat this as a walk, not a roadside pull-off. On the moor, put one of the taller slabs in the foreground of a photo, with several stones behind it and the open hills beyond; a close-up of one stone misses the ring’s shape and setting.

“You're approaching the access for Scorhill Stone Circle, not the stones themselves. From Batworthy Corner, the walk crosses old granite clapper bridges and climbs from the North Teign to a broad ring of standing stones.”

More about Scorhill Stone Circle

What you’re looking atScorhill Stone Circle is a broad, unrestored ring of granite uprights on Scorhill Down, above…

Scorhill Stone Circle is a broad, unrestored ring of granite uprights on Scorhill Down, above the North Teign valley. It measures about 27 metres across; 23 stones still stand, with the tallest about 2.25 metres high, and others lying around the ring. The uprights vary in size and spacing, so the circle reads as an uneven sweep of stone against open moorland rather than a tidy, regular ring. The wider monument also includes three cairns and a length of reave, part of a much larger prehistoric landscape.
