About The Grandstand

The Grandstand is the dark rock “island” that pops up from the bright, cracked surface of Racetrack Playa. That stark contrast is the whole show—minimalist, dramatic, and catnip for photographers. It’s remote, quiet, and feels otherworldly, with big desert ranges framing the dead-flat playa.

Local know-how

Tips for visiting The Grandstand

Drive slowly on Racetrack Valley Road to avoid tire damage.
From the parking area, it’s roughly a half-mile walk across the playa to the rock.
Do not drive on the playa and avoid walking on it when damp enough to leave footprints.
There are no services here; the nearest toilet is at Homestake Campground about two miles south.
Aim for sunrise or sunset for the best light and cooler temperatures.

Best time to visit

Sunrise and sunset are prime for photos—the playa can glow pink in early light and the rock’s texture pops when the sun is low. Midday is harsh for both heat and glare. Crowds are rarely an issue due to the remoteness, but starting early gives you the best light and the coolest temps.

Getting There & On-the-Ground Experience

You’ll park at the signed pullout on the west side of the playa and walk out across the flats—about a half mile—to the base. Please don’t drive on the playa; tracks scar the surface for years. The famous “moving rocks” area sits farther south on the same playa, reachable by a longer walk from here.
