Teklanika River Campground

Overview

Set at Mile 29 along the Teklanika River, this is Denali’s second-largest campground with a wilder vibe than the entrance-area options. It’s remote, quiet, and surrounded by tundra and spruce—with the broad, braided riverbed just a short walk from many sites.

Why It’s Special

Teklanika is the park’s unicorn: the only place you’re allowed to drive your own vehicle past Mile 15 if you have a campsite reservation. You’ll park at your site and leave the car there for your entire stay, which keeps the area peaceful and makes the experience feel genuinely backcountry—without giving up a picnic table and a flat pad.

Campsites & Facilities

There are 53 sites for tents and RVs (up to about 40 feet), and none have hookups. Expect clean vault toilets, seasonal potable water spigots for filling jugs, picnic tables, fire rings, bear-proof trash and recycling, and shared food lockers. There’s no dump or RV fill here; use the facilities at Riley Creek near the entrance before you head in.

Getting There & Key Rules

From the entrance, it’s roughly 29 miles on the Park Road; pavement ends at Savage River (Mile 15) and turns to gravel the rest of the way. If you drive to Teklanika, you must book at least three nights and keep your vehicle parked at your site until you leave. Sightseeing is by the park’s transit buses, which stop right outside the campground. Tent campers who arrive by bus aren’t subject to the three-night minimum.

What To Do From Camp

There’s no formal trailhead here, but that’s part of the fun. Walk the short paths to the wide gravel bars for river wanderings, open views, and classic Denali cross-country exploring. For bigger adventures deeper into the park, hop on a transit bus—drivers will let you off for hikes and you can flag another bus to return.

Scenery & Setting

The Teklanika is a classic braided, glacially fed river—silver-gray channels weaving through a broad gravel bed. Expect big-sky vistas and, on clear days, dramatic mountain backdrops. The campground itself is tucked in spruce and tundra with a pleasantly low-key, wilderness feel.

Wildlife

Campers frequently mention seeing caribou, moose, Dall sheep, and occasionally grizzly bears either from camp or while riding the buses farther in. This is active bear country: use the food lockers, keep a clean camp, and follow all storage rules.

Season & Reservations

Typically open from about May 20 to mid-September, Teklanika is popular and books up quickly because of its unique access and remote feel. Plan ahead, especially if you’re bringing an RV or aiming for a riverside-adjacent site.

What To Bring

Arrive self-sufficient: there are no hookups, showers, laundry, store, or gas here. Bring layers for variable weather, rain gear, extra water containers (for the spigots), a stove for cooking, and whatever power solution you need. Don’t count on cell service or Wi‑Fi.
