Long Pine Key Nature Trail

Long Pine Key Nature Trail is a seven-mile, one-way route from Long Pine Key Road near the campground west to Pine Glades Lake, where it reaches Main Park Road. It follows a broad, rocky corridor through pine rockland and seasonal wet prairie, with exposed limestone and shallow pools underfoot. The route line measures about 6.6 miles; the official description rounds it to seven. Allow about three hours one way. Walking back to the start makes roughly 14 miles and a five- to six-hour outing, so arrange a pickup if you want to hike it point to point.

Long Pine Key sits inside a connected trail network more than 22 miles long. This route follows the named corridor to Pine Glades Lake; it does not include every gate spur or the nearby Three-in-One loop. There are junctions along the way, and trail signs mark the turns. Keep your eye on those markers so a longer network route doesn't sneak into your day.

The trail moves from shrubby slash pine into sawgrass prairie and low pine rockland, including sections on an old raised roadbed. Limestone solution holes pock the ground; some hold shallow water. Near the lake, the route skirts a marshy stretch that can stay wet even in drier weather. The wide tread is still uneven and rocky. The park says it is reviewing low-impact maintenance to protect sensitive habitat, and warns that vegetation and branches may affect passage; check current alerts before you go.

These pines grow on the Miami Rock Ridge, a limestone outcrop that once carried pine rockland north toward Miami. Look through the grasses and palmettos for yellow coreopsis, glade lobelia, marsh pinks and milkweeds. That mix of open pineland, prairie and limestone is the reason this long walk feels different from the park's familiar sawgrass landscape.

Pine Glades Lake is a worthwhile destination in its own right: waterfowl, fish and reptiles use the shore. There's no trail-side drinking water listed, so carry enough for the whole route. Bikes are allowed, but this is not a smooth paved path; the park also lists it as not wheelchair accessible. Pets are not allowed on park trails. Expect intense sun and insects, which can be severe in hot, humid summer.
