Lake Hankinson Track

This is the water-access approach from Middle Fiord on Lake Te Anau to Lake Hankinson Hut, the opening visitor experience for the George Sound Route. After a boat transfer to the Middle Fiord beach, follow the official 0.6-mile (597 m) signposted track to Lake Hankinson, cross the lake by boat or kayak, then walk about five minutes to the hut. The stored line follows the marked access track and the required water transfer to the hut; there is no walk around the lake.

Scenery is classic Fiordland: steep, forested slopes around a long glacial lake. On calm days the reflections are excellent; on windy days, the lake can become rough enough to delay plans. You will see few people—this corner is quiet even in summer.

Plan on about 3.4 miles (5.5 km) of total one-way travel from the Middle Fiord landing to Hankinson Hut, including the 0.6-mile marked walk, the roughly 4.5 km lake crossing, and the short hut approach. Allow about 42 minutes when conditions are friendly: 15 minutes walking to the lake, around 20 minutes on the water, and five minutes from the head of the lake to the hut. The walking is easy; the overall outing is moderate because it relies on boat logistics and weather.

• Access is by water only. Arrange transport from Te Anau Downs across Lake Te Anau to Middle Fiord, then arrange separate transport or carry your own kayak for Lake Hankinson. There is no track around the lake.
• A guided bush-walk-and-lake-cruise option may be available, but confirm transport and conditions with the operator before departure.

Hankinson Hut is a basic standard DOC hut with bunks, heating, mattresses, non-flush toilets, and untreated water that must be boiled. Bookings are not required; carry a tent if you are continuing on the George Sound Route, because weather delays are possible.

This is for visitors comfortable with remote, logistics-heavy travel and variable water conditions. It is not a straightforward roadside day walk. The wider George Sound Route beyond the hut is an expert wilderness route and requires strong navigation and backcountry preparation.

The lake is about 4.5 km long and can be affected by strong winds, with few beaches on which to land. Weather turns quickly in Fiordland—expect rain, wind, and cold any month.
