Sutherland Falls Track

Why hike it

This side track delivers you to the foot of Sutherland Falls, a 580 m, three-tier giant that thunders out of glacier-fed Lake Quill. Expect rainforest, a steep U-shaped glacial valley, and a chorus of smaller waterfalls after rain. It’s sensory overload—in the best way—with mist, roar, and towering cliffs framing the finale.

The route and feel

This is an out-and-back spur from the Milford Track, starting near Quintin Shelter/Lodge. Plan for roughly 6.2 miles/10 km total and 4–5 hours return, with about 400 m of cumulative climb. The path is well maintained but often muddy and slick, especially after Fiordland’s frequent downpours. Good boots are essential; poles help on steeper, greasy sections. The base of the falls is a soak zone—rocks are slick and visibility can vanish in spray, so keep a firm footing and respect drop-offs.

Logistics you need to know

Access is on foot from the Milford Track; in season, you’ll need a Milford Track booking (guided or independent) and to pre-arrange all transport (boat transfers and shuttles). Toilets are at Quintin Shelter. There’s no cell reception—tell someone your plan before you go. No dogs, and drones aren’t permitted.

Nature notes

You’ll move through lush beech forest and along a classic glacially carved valley toward a waterfall that drops in three distinct steps (248 m, 229 m, 103 m). After rain, side cascades multiply and the whole amphitheater comes alive. Birdlife is abundant thanks to the park’s protection and remoteness.

Best time to hike

Late October–April (Great Walks season) is the safest bet: longer days, more facilities, and fewer hazards. Off-season (May–October) brings cold, wet conditions, possible snow, and short daylight—best left to experienced, well-equipped trampers. For photos, early or late light cuts glare; after rain the falls are most dramatic, but the mist can obscure the view. Build weather wiggle room—Fiordland’s conditions change fast.
