Gloomy Knob

Overview

Gloomy Knob is a stark, bare rocky prominence along the east side of the bay, easily recognized from the water. Its dolomite-rich rock resists vegetation, creating smooth, steep gray cliffs that contrast sharply with the forested slopes nearby. It’s a classic “watch-from-the-boat” landmark—dramatic, moody, and a favorite moment on Glacier Bay cruises.

What You’ll See

• Mountain goats are the headliners here, often appearing as tiny white dots on the gray rock. Bring binoculars or a zoom lens to turn those dots into actual goats.
• The setting is cinematic: sheer cliffs backed by big mountain scenery and often wrapped in low cloud or mist, which only amps up the atmosphere.
• In the surrounding water and shoreline you may also spot eagles, seabirds, and marine mammals like sea otters, sea lions, harbor seals, or whales—nice bonuses, even if they aren’t specific to the Knob itself.

Access & Amenities

There are no facilities, trails, or road access at Gloomy Knob—this is undeveloped backcountry shoreline. You view it from a boat (cruise ship, day boat, or smaller watercraft). The area has seen temporary protective closures in the past (including near South Gloomy Knob), so check current NPS guidance before your trip.

Why It’s Unique

The dolomite bedrock leaves the cliffs largely barren, which not only explains the site’s “gloomy” look but also creates ideal terrain for mountain goats. The combination of geology plus reliable goat viewing makes this stop different from the park’s tidewater glacier viewpoints.
