Set in a lush pocket of old‑growth cedar and hemlock, Avalanche Picnic Area is one of the west side’s big hubs. It’s where families lay out lunch by turquoise water, hikers launch to Avalanche Lake, and everyone squeezes in for a look at the churning gorge on the Trail of the Cedars boardwalk. It’s beautiful, convenient, and—yes—busy.

• Trail of the Cedars: a short, mellow boardwalk loop through mossy forest and across Avalanche Gorge’s blue‑green torrent—easy, photogenic, and right here.
• Avalanche Lake Trail: the park‑famous moderate climb to a waterfall‑ringed cirque lake. Expect crowds and a steady grade; start early for a quieter tread and open views at the shore. Some visitors mention a vault toilet near the lake.

Wildlife & Safety

Both black and grizzly bears frequent this valley. Keep food secured, clean your site, carry bear spray, hike in groups, and give wildlife space. The nearby river is beautiful but cold and powerful—treat the water’s edge with respect.

Logistics That Matter

This spot doubles as a summer shuttle transfer point—use it to skip the parking scrum. Vehicle length limits apply on Going‑to‑the‑Sun Road east of here (over 21 ft long or 8 ft wide not allowed on that segment), so plan your approach. Facilities like water and some restrooms are seasonal.

Is It Worth Your Time?

If you want a shaded picnic with instant access to classic Glacier scenery, yes—100%. The tradeoff is popularity; it’s one of the park’s busiest stops. Have a backup plan if the lot is full.

• Time of day: Arrive early morning for parking and a calmer boardwalk; late afternoon can also be pleasant once day‑trippers thin out.
• Season: Typical vehicle access here runs roughly early May to mid‑October; outside that window, the road can close. Expect variable weather year‑round—pack a light rain layer and warmth.
