Avalanche Campground is an 87-site frontcountry campground along Going-to-the-Sun Road, set beneath western hemlock and western red cedar. It works best as a base for the Trail of the Cedars and Avalanche Lake; both are close enough to reach on foot from camp. If those hikes are your plan, staying here saves moving the car. The tradeoff is a popular, compact campground: some sites feel close, and noise can carry between them.

Sites accommodate tents and RVs, and each has a picnic table and fire ring. Seasonal potable water and flush toilets are provided, but there are no showers, camp store, or electrical hookups. Seasonal bear-proof food lockers are near the restrooms, and food storage rules are taken seriously. Bring a headlamp for nighttime bathroom trips. Four sites are walk-to or boat-to, so check the site details before booking.

Every site requires a reservation, and the usual operating season runs from mid-July to mid-September. Vehicles or vehicle combinations longer than 21 feet or wider than 8 feet, including mirrors, are prohibited between Sun Point parking area and the campground. Check that limit before bringing a large RV. The maximum stay is 14 days, quiet hours run from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., and there is no cell reception or internet service.
