McDonald Creek Overlook

Overview

McDonald Creek Overlook is a quick, scenic stop along the Going-to-the-Sun Road that puts you right beside Upper McDonald Creek’s chutes, cascades, and a small waterfall. The creek is part of Glacier’s longest creek system—about 25 miles—and this pullout gives you an easy, close-up look at its crystal-clear, blue-green water.

What You’ll See

Expect polished bedrock, fast-moving water, and foamy cascades that are irresistible for photographers. A short, easy 0.1-mile loop leads to two viewpoints, so you can grab different angles without committing to a longer hike.

Getting There & Parking

You’ll find the signed pullout between Lake McDonald Lodge and the Avalanche area. The observation platform sits just off the parking area, so there’s essentially no hike to reach the views. Parking is limited and fills during the day, and there are no restrooms here. Depending on the season, a vehicle reservation may be required to drive this corridor.

Best Times to Visit

Spring and early summer bring the biggest, most dramatic flows. Late summer often means lower but glassy-clear water that photographs beautifully, and fall adds color in the Lake McDonald Valley. For easier parking and softer light, swing by early or in the evening.

Wildlife

Keep an eye out for waterfowl on the creek. Along nearby trails, people often see deer and raptors, and occasionally black bears or moose. If you decide to hike in the area, carry bear spray and give all wildlife plenty of space.

Make It a Mini-Route

Pair this overlook with other easy creek stops along the same road corridor, like McDonald Falls and Sacred Dancing Cascade. If you want a mellow walk, the Upper McDonald Creek Trail (easy, out-and-back) hugs the water with frequent viewpoints. Johns Lake Loop is another short, popular option that ties in creek scenery.

Safety

Stay behind railings—wet rock here is slick and unforgiving. Keep kids close and resist the temptation to scramble down to the water.
