Pima Point

Pima Point is a west-facing overlook on Hermit Road, near its western end before Hermits Rest. The canyon opens toward the Cataract Plains, with the Colorado River far below. It is a worthwhile stop if you want to find the river in the view and take in how the canyon opens toward the west. Give it more than a quick glance: the river is a thin thread far below, easy to miss in the scale of the view.

The broad, unusually flat plateau on the western horizon is the Cataract Plains, around 6,000 to 7,000 feet high. Many layers of rock eroded from the plateau before the Grand Canyon was cut, leaving its level surface above the steep, broken walls. Pick out the straight skyline, then follow the slopes down toward the river to see the change in scale.

When the canyon is quiet, the splash and grind of Granite Rapids far below can echo up the walls. Pause after your first look and listen for the distant sound.

Sunset can bring warm light to the red terraces. Use a wide frame to show how the canyon layers stack up; the Colorado River is a thin line far below, so a longer lens helps bring it out.

The paved Greenway runs 1.1 miles west from Pima Point to Hermits Rest and 1.7 miles east to Monument Creek Vista. The paved Pima Point to Hermits Rest section is accessible for wheelchair users and cyclists as well as walkers; the 1.1-mile walk west makes a worthwhile extension.

Hermit Road is generally closed to private vehicles from March 1 through November 30; the free Red Route shuttle serves the viewpoints then, and you can also walk or bike. In December through February, private vehicles under 22 feet can use the road, but the shuttle does not run. Benches, interpretive displays, a scenic viewing area and wheelchair access are available at Pima Point. For restrooms and a small snack bar, continue 1.1 miles west to Hermits Rest.
