A classic Otways bush camp beside the Gellibrand River, Stevensons Falls Campground is all about simple, scenic camping with a waterfall on your doorstep. It’s free, no bookings, and set among a pocket of Californian redwoods planted as a trial in the 1980s. The area received upgrades in 2023 under Victoria’s Great Outdoors program, and the official information was updated January 22, 2025.
Campsites & Facilities
There are 44 designated, vehicle‑access tent sites. Facilities are basic but useful: wood‑fired BBQs, picnic tables and toilets. It’s 2WD‑accessible and dogs are allowed (keep them on a lead). This campground isn’t designed for caravans or camper trailers—Dandos Campground is the recommended alternative for those setups. Expect simple bush amenities and pack accordingly.
The Waterfall & Short Walks
From the day‑use car park, an easy, well‑formed path crosses the river to a viewing platform at the base of Stevensons Falls, which drops about 15 m. The crossing is bridged now, making the stroll quick and popular. Beyond the main falls walk, two mellow options round things out: the Redwoods Boardwalk and the Blue Spruce Walk along the Gellibrand River.
Wildlife & Atmosphere
Kangaroos and wrens frequent the picnic area, and the redwoods give the campground a cool, cathedral feel. Anglers can try their luck in the Gellibrand River, and on warm days some visitors wade near the base of the falls—always assess conditions and take care.
Best Time to Visit
Year‑round works. Expect smaller flows in summer and a more powerful display in the cooler, wetter months. For camping, arrive early on weekends and holidays to snag a site; midweek sees fewer people.

This is a simple bush camp: bring drinking water and toilet paper, and plan to pack out your rubbish. The access road can feel narrow and winding in places. Fires belong in designated facilities only, and keep dogs leashed.
