Overview
Stevensons Falls delivers that classic Otways mix: a lively ~15 m waterfall on the Gellibrand River framed by lush ferns and tall forest. It’s popular for good reason—easy to reach, rewarding even on a short stop, and paired with a free campground if you want to linger.
The Walks
- Main falls walk: A short, mostly flat boardwalk from the day‑visitor car park crosses the river to a viewing platform at the base of the falls. Allow 20–30 minutes return.
- From the campground: A longer, easy track of about 2.3–3 km return (45–60 minutes) if you’re starting at camp or if the day‑use car park is busy.
- Extra strolls: The Redwoods Boardwalk among Californian redwoods and the Blue Spruce Walk along the river add variety without much effort.
Facilities & What’s New
Recent upgrades (2023) improved paths, the viewing platform and day‑use setup. You’ll find picnic tables and toilets at the day‑visitor area, plus a car park right by the trail start. Dogs are allowed, and fishing is permitted. There are no fees or bookings required for day use.
Camping Next Door
Stevensons Falls Campground is free and spacious with 44 designated tent sites beside the river. Expect wood‑fired BBQs, picnic tables and toilets. It’s not suitable for caravans or camper trailers, and there are no showers. Multiple reports note no mobile reception and no running/drinking water—arrive self‑sufficient and pack out all rubbish.
Nature & Wildlife
Kangaroos, wallabies and cheeky birds frequent the picnic grounds and forest edge. The ferny river flats stay green year‑round, and those towering redwoods make the side‑trips feel a bit storybook.
Getting There
Near Barramunga, head inland from the Great Ocean Road via Skenes Creek–Forest Road, then Upper Gellibrand Road to the day‑use area and campground. Roads are 2WD‑friendly but unsealed; after heavy rain sections can be wet. A former river ford has been bridged, improving reliability, but still drive cautiously.
Best Time to Visit
- Flow: The falls are good most of the year and best after rain.
- Crowds: Go early or on weekdays; free camping draws weekend and holiday crowds.
