Housed inside the Lorne Visitor Information Centre, The Great Ocean Road Story is a free interpretive exhibition that gives you the who, why, and how behind Australia’s most famous coastal drive. It’s an easy, in‑town stop that adds real context to the scenery you’re about to see (or just saw).

The Story It Tells (short version)
- 1918: A private Great Ocean Road Trust forms near the end of WWI to fund and build a coastal road, led by Howard Hitchcock.
- 1919 onward: Around 3,000 returned servicemen carve the route with hand tools through hazardous terrain.
- 1922: The Eastern View–Lorne section opens; tolls help recoup costs.
- 1932: Lorne–Apollo Bay completed; the road is celebrated as the world’s largest war memorial.
- 1936: The Trust hands the road to the state; tolls end.
- Later: Recognized among great scenic drives, added to the National Heritage List in 2011.
