The Story It Tells (short version)
- 1918: A private Great Ocean Road Trust forms near the end of WWI to fund and build a coastal road, led by Howard Hitchcock.
- 1919 onward: Around 3,000 returned servicemen carve the route with hand tools through hazardous terrain.
- 1922: The Eastern View–Lorne section opens; tolls help recoup costs.
- 1932: Lorne–Apollo Bay completed; the road is celebrated as the world’s largest war memorial.
- 1936: The Trust hands the road to the state; tolls end.
- Later: Recognized among great scenic drives, added to the National Heritage List in 2011.
