Lorne Main Beach

Lorne Main Beach is a 1.2 km stretch of sand beside the Great Ocean Road. A foreshore reserve sits between the road and the shore, so it is easy to turn a drive break into a swim, surf or walk along the bay. Look down the curve toward Lorne Pier; at dawn, wet sand can catch reflections of the pier and sky.

Parking, toilets, showers and change rooms are listed around the foreshore, along with picnic and BBQ areas. There is also a pool nearby, with Lorne’s cafes and shops close behind the beach. The facilities are spread along the foreshore, so do not assume everything is right at the same sand access.

This is an open-coast beach, not a sheltered cove. Rocks, high surf and flash rips are listed hazards, so check local conditions and safety signs before swimming. Sunny days and public holidays can draw a crowd; visitor reports suggest weekdays can be quieter.

After bathing accidents, a public meeting at Lorne’s Library Hall on 22 March 1922 resolved to form a swimming and lifesaving association, with patrols, rescue equipment and instruction among its proposals. A later club chronology dates the Lorne Surf Life Saving Club’s formation to the 1930s. The records do not make the formal founding date entirely clear, but they show how long safer swimming has mattered here.
