Overview

Carisbrook Falls is a quick, worthwhile detour off the Great Ocean Road near Wongarra, between Skenes Creek and Kennett River. The track climbs gently to a single lookout across a ravine, where a tall waterfall sheets down slanted rock. It’s a popular leg‑stretch on the coastal drive, especially when recent rain has the creek pumping.

The Walk

Expect a short out‑and‑back stroll with a steady grade and a few uneven, steeper bits. Most people take 15–30 minutes return, longer if you linger with a camera. The path ends at one viewpoint with railings and a small bench; there’s no safe or official route to the base, so treat this as a look‑but‑don’t‑touch waterfall stop.

What You’ll See

From the lookout you get a grandstand view of the falls pouring into a rocky gorge framed by coastal bushland. The setting can feel exposed thanks to ocean breezes, which makes the air crisp and the sound of water carry nicely—bring a light layer if the weather turns.

Best Time to Visit

Go soon after rainfall for the most impressive flow. Weekends and midday see the most pass‑through traffic on the Great Ocean Road, so aim for early morning or late afternoon for quieter viewing and softer light.

Practicalities & Rules

There’s a small, unsealed car park at the trailhead and no on‑site facilities (no toilets, no picnic tables). As this is within a national park, dogs aren’t permitted. Drones require a permit, and there’s no camping, fires, fishing, bicycles, or horses on this walk. The track has uneven ground and a short steep section—wear sturdy footwear and take care after rain. Parks Victoria periodically posts changed conditions; check for updates before you go.

Wildlife

Around the Otways, Parks Victoria notes increased digging by short‑beaked echidnas and long‑nosed bandicoots along trails, especially at dawn and dusk. Their burrows can create ankle‑turners—watch your step, carry a torch if you’re out in low light, and never disturb wildlife. Nearby coastal forest edges (e.g., toward Kennett River) are also known for koala sightings.

For Adventurous Types

Separate from the tourist walk, Carisbrook Creek hosts a technical canyoning descent with multiple abseils and some swims. It’s for experienced canyoners only and is designed to stay out of sight of general visitors. If you’re in that crowd, follow decontamination procedures to prevent freshwater pests, and don’t leave the signed walking track or interfere with installed equipment.
