Upper Sand Creek Lake

Upper Sand Creek Lake is a high alpine lake in the Sand Creek Basin of Great Sand Dunes National Preserve, in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. This is a strenuous backcountry hike to a destination beyond Music Pass, not a roadside stop. From Music Pass Trailhead, expect 8 to 9 miles round trip and about 2,000 feet of climbing. The lake sits around 11,742 feet, where the altitude adds to the effort. Published route descriptions range from 8 to 9 miles; plan for the longer figure.

From CO 69, follow the signed Music Pass and South Colony Lakes turnoff about 4.5 miles south of Westcliffe. High-clearance 4WD can continue to Music Pass Trailhead. With a 2WD vehicle, park where Rainbow Trail crosses Music Pass Road; walking from there adds 2.5 miles each way, making the full outing about 13 to 14 miles. From the trailhead, a steep mile climbs to Music Pass, then the route continues toward the lake. The pass gives you a view into Upper Sand Creek Basin before the hike reaches the lake itself.

The lake lies beneath a high, rocky skyline. Nearby Marble Mountain rises to 13,266 feet, and the basin view from its summit includes Upper Sand Creek Lake and 13,522-foot Milwaukee Peak. That wide view takes an additional climb from Music Pass. At the lake, include the water with the surrounding cirque and peaks to show its setting.
