Overview
Dunes Overlook is a pair of wooded foothill viewpoints above Piñon Flats Campground, looking over the dune field toward Mount Herald and the Sangre de Cristo. I'd go if you want the view enough to earn it on a trail; this isn't the roadside dune stop near the main day-use area. From Sand Ramp Trailhead, Upper Overlook is about a mile each way, with Lower Overlook nearby on a short side path.

Guide
The first half mile follows Sand Ramp Trail and is mostly level. At the turnoff, Dunes Overlook Trail climbs four switchbacks, gaining about 250 feet to Upper Overlook. The Lower viewpoint is about a tenth of a mile away, so visit both if you have the legs.
Lower Overlook gives the stronger frame of Mount Herald and the distant dunes, with pinyon and juniper around the view. Let those trees edge the foreground and keep the dune field and mountain in the distance. Upper Overlook has a similar broad view; seeing both lets you compare the angles.
