Cataract Falls

Overview

Cataract Falls is a petite, about 40-foot cascade tucked just behind Sugarlands Visitor Center. It’s a classic “stretch your legs” stop: quick, scenic, and perfect if you want a taste of the Smokies without committing to a long hike. The falls run year-round, but they look their best a day or two after rain.

Getting There

You’ve got two easy approaches:

• From Sugarlands Visitor Center: Start on the Fighting Creek Nature Trail between the main building and the restrooms. Cross the large bridge, then turn right at the junction to reach the falls. Expect roughly 0.7–1.0 miles round trip.
• From the Cove Mountain Trailhead: Park in the Sugarlands Headquarters lots (A/B/C), walk across the small bridge on Sugarlands Residence Road, and pick up the trail on the right. This trims it to about 0.5 miles round trip.

Trail Feel

The path mixes paved sections, wooden bridges, and packed dirt with some roots. It meanders beside Fighting Creek with plenty of greenery and photo spots along the way. Benches and picnic tables sit near the start by the visitor center, and restrooms are there too.

Crowds & Expectations

Because it’s so close to Gatlinburg and so easy, it’s popular. The area around the falls can feel busy, especially on summer weekends and mid‑day. If you want a more peaceful moment (and cleaner photos), go early on a weekday. Also, set expectations: it’s a small waterfall—lovely up close, but not a thundering show unless it’s recently rained.

Safety

Rocks and roots can be slick, especially after rain. Don’t climb around the falls—injuries happen. Enjoy the view from the bottom and keep feet dry unless you’re sure of your footing.

Wildlife

This is a great “starter” nature walk for kids, with occasional butterflies and birds along the creek. Keep eyes and ears open, especially in warmer months.

Extend Your Visit

If you’re feeling energized, continue on the Cove Mountain Trail beyond the falls for a more substantial hike away from the crowds. Otherwise, loop back and explore the exhibits at Sugarlands Visitor Center.

Best Time to Visit

• For fewer people: Early mornings and weekdays.
• For best flow: A day or two after rainfall.
• For parking: Arrive early; the visitor center and headquarters lots fill quickly on busy days.

Practicalities

No special permits or reservations are needed for this short outing. Use the visitor center restrooms before you start; there are no facilities at the falls.
