Sugarlands Visitor Center

Sugarlands Visitor Center is a staffed orientation stop on US-441, just south of Gatlinburg, at the north-side approach to Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Start here for a park map or help choosing a walk or hike; rangers can help match a route to your time and ability. The lot can be crowded during busy periods, so arriving early helps if you want to plan here before driving deeper into the park.

A large raised-relief map gives you a hands-on overview of the Smokies and its trails. Inside, a black-bear display leads into natural-history exhibits about plants and animals that live, or once lived, in the park. The museum is called “Discover Life in the Smokies,” and makes a useful short introduction before you head out to see the landscape itself.

There is a staffed information desk, seasonal ranger-led programs, and a Backcountry Permit Office. The park shop sells books and souvenirs; drink vending, public restrooms, potable water, Wi-Fi and an ATM are also listed here. The center and its restrooms are listed as wheelchair accessible. Plan a separate meal stop if you need more than a drink.

The separate Sugarlands Valley Nature Trail is close by if you want to stretch your legs after the exhibits. It is a flat, paved half-mile loop beside a stream, with old stone chimneys and rock walls that mark earlier settlement in the valley. Its trailhead and parking area are separate from the visitor-center building.
