Overview

Cataract Falls is the definition of an easy win: a short, shady walk along Fighting Creek to a photogenic, narrow 25‑foot waterfall. It’s minutes from Gatlinburg and ideal for families, first‑time visitors, or anyone squeezing in a quick nature break.

Distance and Route Options

There are two common ways to do this. From Sugarlands Visitor Center, it’s roughly 0.7–1.1 miles round trip depending on how much of the Fighting Creek Nature Trail you include. If you’d rather keep it super short, start at the Cove Mountain Trailhead near Park Headquarters for about 0.5 miles round trip. Both options are out‑and‑back and mostly flat with minimal elevation (around 30 feet total).

What to Expect

Surfaces are a mix of pavement or asphalt near the visitor center, sturdy wooden bridges, and packed dirt with some roots. The path is generally wide and gentle, but expect a brief steeper grade in spots and a small set of steps near the falls. The creekside walk is pleasant and shaded, with fungi on downed logs, spring wildflowers, and frequent bird activity. The falls themselves look best a day or two after rain; in dry spells, flow can be underwhelming.

Accessibility and Family Notes

This is a friendly choice for mixed‑ability groups. The visitor center has accessible restrooms and parking, and much of the route from that side is smooth and gentle. That said, roots, short steeper sections, and a few steps near the waterfall mean it’s not fully stroller‑friendly—an all‑terrain wagon can work, but babywearing is easier. Pets aren’t allowed on this trail. If you’re visiting with kids, the Sugarlands Visitor Center is a handy base for water, rest breaks, and Junior Ranger activities.

Best Times to Hike

It’s hikeable year‑round. March through November feels especially nice under the trees. Go early in the morning or on weekdays for fewer people and easier parking. Photographers: the falls sit in a shaded hollow—soft light is common, and flow is best shortly after rain.

Candid Take

Cataract Falls is quick, easy, and rewarding for the time invested—perfect as a warm‑up or a leg‑stretcher between bigger Smokies adventures. It can get busy and the waterfall is small, so keep expectations in check. Want a longer outing after your visit? Continue on Cove Mountain Trail past the falls for a more traditional hike without the crowds.

Tips

  • Start at Park Headquarters if you want the shortest walk.
  • Do not climb on or around the falls—slippery rock and steep drops make for nasty falls.
  • Bring a small trash bag and pack out your litter; bins are at the visitor center.

Pros

  • Two trailhead options let you tailor the distance to your group
  • Shady creekside walking that stays comfortable on hot days

Cons

  • Crowded at peak times with limited parking near the visitor center
  • Small waterfall can disappoint in dry spells

Parking

Park at Sugarlands Visitor Center for the 0.7–1.1 mile round trip via the Fighting Creek Nature Trail, or use the Sugarlands Headquarters lots (A, B, and C) to start at the Cove Mountain Trailhead for a ~0.5 mile round trip. Restrooms are at the visitor center.

Caution

Do not climb on the waterfall or wet rocks. Expect roots, a brief steeper grade, and a few steps near the falls—tough for strollers and some mobility devices. Crowds are common; arrive early.
