Cataract Falls Trail

Cataract Falls is a short out-and-back from Sugarlands Visitor Center through a wooded creek corridor to a narrow waterfall. The connected path measures about 0.54 mile each way; allow roughly 1.1 miles round trip and 30 minutes to an hour with time at the falls. Published figures differ: one visitor description gives 0.7 mile round trip, while a separate falls-side segment is listed at 0.5 mile one way. Those estimates do not define the same endpoints as the mapped route here.

From behind the visitor center, pass the restrooms and take the Fighting Creek Nature Trail. Follow the creek through the trees, then turn right at the junction after the footbridge beside a distinctive sycamore. Tree-identification markers line the approach. At Cataract Falls, return the same way; the route is not a loop.

The destination is a narrow cascade about 40 feet high, most dramatic after heavy rain. It can look modest when water is low. Stay at the bottom viewing area and do not climb around the falls; visitors have been severely injured doing so. Reports of footing vary, with roots, rocks, steps, and mud mentioned, so do not count on a reliably step-free or stroller-friendly walk.

After returning to the footbridge, you can continue straight on the separate one-mile Fighting Creek Nature Trail loop past John Ownby Cabin, adding about 30 minutes. That loop is not included in this trail's distance. Visitor-center restrooms are at the start; no food or water service along the route was confirmed. Dogs are not allowed on this trail; service animals are treated separately. A parking tag is required for vehicles parked more than 15 minutes.
