Kīpahulu Campground

Kīpahulu Campground is a grassy drive-up and walk-in campground above rocky ocean cliffs in Haleakalā’s coastal district. It’s a quiet base for ʻOheʻo Gulch and Kūloa Point, both a short walk away. Come for the coastal setting and sunrise over the Alenuihāhā Channel; this is not a beach or swimming stop.

The campground is about an eighth of a mile south of Kīpahulu Visitor Center. From camp, follow the established route to Kūloa Point and ʻOheʻo Gulch. Pīpīwai Trail starts near the visitor center and heads through bamboo toward Makahiku and Waimoku Falls. The ʻOheʻo pools are for viewing from the trail; getting into the stream is prohibited.

Sites have picnic tables, and drive-up sites also have charcoal grills. Vault toilets are available, but there’s no water, shower, or electricity at the campground. Fill up and use the flush restrooms at the nearby visitor center; Hāna’s general stores, about 10 miles away, are the nearest place to pick up food and water. Reservations are required, and park entry is separate. Expect sun, rain, mosquitoes, and sometimes strong wind at this exposed coastal site.

Kīpahulu has been home to people for centuries. Archaeological evidence dates settlement in the coastal district to A.D. 1161–1384, and surveys have recorded more than 300 features. Stone walls around Kūloa Point reflect several eras of Hawaiian life, plantation and ranching, and park stewardship. Stay on established paths and leave the walls undisturbed.
