Leleiwi Overlook

Leleiwi Overlook is a sheltered viewpoint on Haleakalā’s crater rim, a 0.3-mile round trip from the parking area on the summit road. The path climbs about 100 feet on rocky, uneven steps, so it’s short but more than a roadside pullout. Cross the marked pedestrian crossing and keep following the path around the mountain; the shelter and the full view aren’t obvious from the lot. This is not a step-free walk. If clouds have filled the crater, the main view can disappear.

On a clear day, look through Koʻolau Gap toward Maui’s north shore. Halemauʻu Trail’s switchbacks trace the slope to the left; Hanakauhi and Kaupō Gap sit farther to the right. The crater floor below is cut by dark lava flows and dotted with cinder cones. For a wide photo, move clear of the shelter roof and frame the gaps across the crater; the structure can get in the way if you shoot from right beside it.

Leleiwi means “bone altar.” The name appears on early maps, but the story behind it has been lost. Near the trailhead, look for remains of a stone ranch wall. Ranchers stacked it in the late 1800s to guide cattle across the rough ground.

The overlook was developed in 1966 as part of Mission 66, the National Park Service effort to improve visitor facilities. Its roofed shelter and interpretive panel still make this feel like a place to pause and look, rather than just a viewpoint beside the road.

Koʻolau and Kaupō Gaps were carved by erosion over thousands of years. Later lava flows partly filled the old valleys, leaving the flatter floors visible today. Some of the crater’s younger features came from eruptions within the past thousand years, including Puʻu o Māui and Ka Luʻu o ka ʻŌʻō.

The short approach passes native māmane, pūkiawe, ʻōhelo, and nāʻenaʻe (also called kūpaoa). Nēnē and other birds may turn up along the trail; from the overlook, tropic birds and seabirds can be seen soaring or returning to their burrows toward evening. Treat any sighting as a bonus, not a sure thing.

Clouds sometimes pour into the crater with the trade-wind inversion and hide the view. At sunrise or sunset, when the sun is behind you and cloud sits below, you may see a Brocken Spectre: your shadow cast onto the cloud and ringed by a faint rainbow. This is high on the summit road, where wind, cold, and quickly changing weather can make a short stop feel much harsher than the drive up.
