Makahiku Falls Overlook is the first waterfall viewpoint on Pīpīwai Trail in Haleakalā's Kīpahulu District, about half a mile from the trailhead. If Makahiku is your goal, this is a good place to turn around; allow about an hour for the out-and-back.

From the parking area, head toward Kīpahulu Visitor Center, follow the paved path in front of it to the T-junction, then turn left onto Pīpīwai Trail. The approach is unpaved and uneven, with stairs, rocks and exposed roots; it can be muddy and gains noticeable elevation over the short distance. It's more work than the mileage suggests.

The trail continues past the overlook through a bamboo forest about a mile from the trailhead, then on to Waimoku Falls two miles each way. That full out-and-back is four miles with about 800 feet of gain. You don't need to take it on for the Makahiku view; turn around here if the waterfall was your main reason for walking.
