Kīpahulu Visitor Center

Kīpahulu Visitor Center is a one-story information center in Haleakalā National Park’s remote coastal district, at Mile Marker 42 on Hāna Highway, about 12 miles past Hāna. It has a ranger information desk, natural and cultural history exhibits, and a small bookstore. If you’re exploring Kīpahulu, this is a useful place to get your bearings before heading to the trailheads and waysides; parking, an accessible restroom, and a bottle-filling station are here.

Park entry is fee-controlled. Bring water, sun protection, mosquito repellent, and sturdy shoes if you’re hiking: the district is remote, and emergency medical help is at least an hour away. Pīpīwai Trail can be muddy and uneven underfoot. The center and bookstore depend on staffing, while the restroom is available outside staffed hours unless severe weather closes the park. The bookstore carries field guides and Hawaiian history and culture titles, plus a small selection of snacks; it isn’t a meal stop.

Stay on Kūloa Point Trail for the view of the Pools of ʻOheʻo. The park warns of flash floods and sudden rockfall in the area, so heed posted safety guidance.

A carved waʻa, a traditional Hawaiian canoe, sits among the exhibits. Look up for the suspended ʻiwa, or frigatebird, model with its seven-foot wingspan. The center’s cultural displays cover Native Hawaiian history and practices; outside, a painting depicts the demigod Māui snaring the sun.

Kīpahulu has been inhabited by Native Hawaiians for centuries and remains part of a living culture. Its traditional ahupuaʻa land divisions run from the sea to the summit. The district’s streams hold endemic gobies, fish descended from saltwater ancestors, linking the coast and upland waters in an unusual way.

The deck beside the center looks out over the coast. On clear days, Hawaiʻi Island’s four peaks appear across the water. A path leads from the center toward nearby trails and interpretive waysides, so it’s easy to combine the exhibits with a look at the coastline.
