More about Goat Rock Viewpoint

Make the hike for the whole viewGoat Rock Viewpoint is a natural-rock overlook on North Mountain, reached from Goat Rock Trail…

Goat Rock Viewpoint is a natural-rock overlook on North Mountain, reached from Goat Rock Trail rather than the separate roadside pullout. The trail is 1.1 miles each way, or 2.2 miles out and back, on packed gravel and dirt. It passes beneath large boulders before a signed stairway climbs to the rock. Stay right at the fork and watch for stone bars across the path; they are a trip hazard. The trailhead begins just south of the limited parking at North Mountain Overlook. This route is rocky and not ADA-compliant, so bring sturdy shoes and water. No food service, restroom, or drinking-water source is listed at Goat Rock; plan facilities before setting out. Leashed dogs are allowed. Many visitors enjoy the view, though some find the final panorama modest, so treat the walk and the perch as one outing rather than a quick roadside stop.

From the rock, the view reaches the forested Zigzag Mountains, with Indian Mountain—also called Silver Mountain—to the right. Open glades on the approach add views toward Indian Mountain and east Hot Springs. For a photo, frame the ridgelines and sky together; sunset light brings out the layers of hills.

The park's 1924 chronology records branch trails on North Mountain completed that June, followed by steps to the top of Goat Rock and a stone bench built on the rock. Those early improvements made the outcrop a destination on the mountain above town.

The large boulders along the approach are novaculite. Its predictable, shell-shaped fractures made it useful to Native Americans for shaping tools such as arrowheads, blades, and drills.

Why the mountains zigzagThe ridges belong to the folded Ouachita Mountains.

The ridges belong to the folded Ouachita Mountains. Their sharp, angular folds look like a zigzag from above, which is the origin of the Zigzag Mountains' name. From Goat Rock, those folded ridgelines are the main subject of the view.
