“Hector Lake Viewpoint is coming up, a quick stop for a distant strip of blue water beneath the mountains. Trees hide much of the lake, so I'd skip it if you're hoping for an open shoreline view.”

More about Hector Lake Viewpoint

A short stop above the lakeHector Lake Viewpoint is a roadside pullout on the Icefields Parkway, looking through forest…

Hector Lake Viewpoint is a roadside pullout on the Icefields Parkway, looking through forest toward the lake and a wall of Rocky Mountain peaks. It works best as a brief scenery break: the water is distant and partly hidden, so this is not a way to reach the shore.

Frame the view you haveThe lake appears as a strip of blue behind the trees.

The lake appears as a strip of blue behind the trees. Look for a gap in the foreground forest and keep the snow-dusted peaks in the frame; the trees make this feel more enclosed than an open lake overlook. The small turnout can be easy to miss while driving.

For a closer lookThe shoreline is a separate outing from its own highway access, about 2.2 km (1.4 mi) each way.

The shoreline is a separate outing from its own highway access, about 2.2 km (1.4 mi) each way. Use this viewpoint for a quick roadside view; choose the separate walk if getting to the water matters to you.

A name from the Palliser ExpeditionGeorge M.

George M. Dawson named Hector Lake in 1884 in honor of geologist Sir James Hector, who explored the Bow Valley with the Palliser Expedition in 1858. The lake carries the explorer's name, even though this pullout offers only a distant glimpse of it.
