Sunwapta Falls

Overview

Sunwapta Falls is a roadside showstopper on the Icefields Parkway, about 55 km south of Jasper. The Sunwapta River, fed by the Athabasca Glacier, funnels into a narrow canyon before plunging roughly 18 meters at the Upper Falls—loud, turbulent, and photogenic. The Stoney word “Sunwapta” translates to turbulent water, and you’ll understand why the moment you hear it.

Upper vs. Lower Falls

Most people stop at the Upper Falls viewpoint right by the parking lot. It’s dramatic and effortless. If you have a bit more time, follow the forest trail downstream to the Lower Falls (roughly 1.2 km round-trip). The crowds thin almost immediately, and the canyon scenery feels more serene while still delivering excellent viewpoints.

What You’ll See

Expect a classic Rockies scene: glacial-blue water surging through a tight limestone canyon, surrounded by dense evergreen forest. In late spring and early summer, snow and glacier melt amplify both volume and color, making the falls especially powerful.

This is a comfortable stop with practical facilities near the parking area: restrooms, picnic tables, and garbage cans. It’s easy to linger for lunch and multiple angles before continuing your Parkway drive.

Wildlife

The main viewpoints are busy, so wildlife tends to keep its distance. Along the quieter Lower Falls path, you may hear birds and occasionally notice small forest mammals—keep your eyes open but your expectations measured.

• Timing: Arrive early or later in the evening to dodge tour bus surges and snag parking.
• Seasonality: Late spring through early summer brings peak flow and drama from glacial melt.
• Photography: Soft morning or evening light flatters the canyon; mid-day can be harsh but the water color still pops.
