Columbia Icefield Skywalk

Columbia Icefield Skywalk is a ticketed, one-kilometre interpretive walkway ending at a glass-floored platform above the Sunwapta Valley. It is reached from the Glacier Discovery Centre by shuttle, so it is a planned attraction, not a quick pullout from the highway.

The self-paced route is described as accessible and includes interactive features about fossils, wildlife footprints and other parts of the landscape. Give the walkway and shuttle trip time in your schedule; there is more to the visit than stepping off the bus at the platform.

At the end, the glass floor puts the depth of the valley into focus: the platform sits about 280 metres above it. If heights make you uneasy, that direct look down is a real part of the experience, not a small detail.

Beyond the glass floor, the platform looks out across the Sunwapta Valley toward the surrounding mountain landscape. It is the valley drop and the built walkway together that make the stop distinctive.

For a photo that reads as this place, keep part of the curved glass platform or railing at the edge of the frame and the valley beyond it. A wide mountain panorama alone loses the structure that makes this viewpoint different.

Check in at the Glacier Discovery Centre, where the shuttle to and from the Skywalk begins. The attraction is seasonal, so check current operating dates before building it into your trip. Busy periods can mean crowds or a wait for the return shuttle; leave slack if you are driving the Parkway. If you want only a quick panorama, the ticketed shuttle and one-kilometre walk may feel like too much process for the view.
