Hiking Douglas Center Loop

Take the short Miller Woods loopDouglas Center Loop is the easy 0.9-mile circuit from the Paul H.

Douglas Center Loop is the easy 0.9-mile circuit from the Paul H. Douglas Center, usually about a half hour. It circles the nearby wetlands and black oak savanna, making it the short way to get a feel for Miller Woods. The separate beach outing is a 3.4-mile out-and-back from this same starting area; choose that one if Lake Michigan is your goal.

Water between old dunesMiller Woods is a patchwork of sandy ridges and low, wet swales.

Miller Woods is a patchwork of sandy ridges and low, wet swales. This loop stays around the wetland complex, where shallow ponds sit beside the open black oak savanna. The trees are spaced out enough for sunlight to reach native grasses and wildflowers; lupine and other blooms are especially noticeable in spring and summer. The visitor center is named for Illinois senator Paul H. Douglas, who introduced legislation to protect the Dunes in 1958.

Keep to the trailExpect mostly packed dirt with some loose sand, plus a boardwalk beside the wetland.

Expect mostly packed dirt with some loose sand, plus a boardwalk beside the wetland. Narrow sections are bordered by poison ivy, and ticks are present year-round, so stay single file and keep to the established tread. The trail itself is not wheelchair accessible; the separate walkway from the Center to the marsh boardwalk and picnic tables is.
