“You're approaching Indiana Dunes State Park, with the beach and Dunes Pavilion farther along the park road. This is a separately managed park, so a federal parks pass doesn't cover admission.”

More about Indiana Dunes State Park Beach

Why the beach deserves a stopIndiana Dunes State Park Beach is a long Lake Michigan shoreline of broad sand, backed by dunes…

Indiana Dunes State Park Beach is a long Lake Michigan shoreline of broad sand, backed by dunes that rise nearly 200 feet. The state park has more than three miles of beach, so this is a place to walk and settle by the water, not a quick lookout. I'd make time for it if you want an open lake-and-sand day, with the Dunes Pavilion close by for food and beach supplies. Keep the two parks straight: this beach is in Indiana's state park, with its own entrance separate from Indiana Dunes National Park.

Swimming and getting onto the sandSwimming follows the state park's own rules.

Swimming follows the state park's own rules. Hours and the designated area can change with staffing and weather, so check with the park before you plan around a swim. Dogs aren't allowed on the state-park beach. The park offers mobility mats to make beach access easier; ask staff about their current setup if you need one. A federal parks pass doesn't cover the state-park entrance.

The main pleasure here is simple: a long sandy walk with Lake Michigan on one side and the dune ridge behind you. Beachcombing and an unhurried walk suit the broad, open shore. On a clear day, look west along the lake for Chicago's distant skyline; haze can hide it completely.

Dunes still at workThe broader Indiana Dunes landscape has been building for a long time.

The broader Indiana Dunes landscape has been building for a long time. The modern dunes and beaches in this region formed about 5,900 years ago, while older forested dune phases began more than 10,000 years ago. Beachgrass traps windblown sand and builds foredunes. Where plant cover breaks, wind can carve a blowout that develops into a curved, parabolic dune. The ridge behind the beach is part of a landscape that keeps changing.

A bathing beach before the state parkWaverly Beach was one of the area's early bathing beaches.

Waverly Beach was one of the area's early bathing beaches. By the early 1900s, Chicago-area visitors were coming to swim along this stretch of shore. Preservation efforts led to the state park's establishment in 1925, protecting the dunes and beach that had already drawn people here.

The Pavilion has its own historyThe Dunes Pavilion dates to 1930 and has been restored as a beachside stop.

The Dunes Pavilion dates to 1930 and has been restored as a beachside stop. Its restaurant and grill, ice cream shop, snacks and beach supplies make it easy to add a meal or treat to a shore day. It also advertises rooftop views over the lake; the Pavilion's food and rooftop service vary by season and weather.

For a beach photo, let the curving waterline lead into the distance and keep some dune-backed shore in the frame. When visibility is crisp, look west along the lake horizon for Chicago; it can be a thin line rather than a dramatic skyline.
