Feldtmann Lake

Overview

Feldtmann Lake is a large, quiet inland lake on the southwest end of the island, tucked away from the busier entry points and only reachable on foot via the Feldtmann Lake and Feldtmann Ridge Trails. It’s a centerpiece of the multi-day Feldtmann Loop, with a simple lakeside campground and a firm two-night stay limit during peak season.

What You’ll See

Expect calm, reflective water bordered by forest and extensive wetlands. Birdlife is a highlight here—especially waterfowl—making the shoreline great for casual birding. Hikers often report moose (and beaver activity) in the surrounding lake-and-wetland habitat. A small sandy patch near the campground offers an easy spot to rest and filter water. Approaches along Feldtmann Ridge deliver wide views over the lake and its wetlands.

Getting There

There are no roads or vehicle access. Most backpackers arrive from Windigo after an 8.5–9 mile hike. Trails are maintained but can be brushy in places, reinforcing the lake’s low-traffic, wilderness feel.

Nearby Highlights

From Feldtmann Lake, a signed segment heads toward Siskiwit Bay on Lake Superior. Rainbow Cove is about 0.8 miles from the campground—an exposed shoreline known for sunsets and, on clear evenings, distant views of the Rock of Ages Lighthouse.

Wildlife

This is prime habitat for waterfowl and other birds, with frequent reports of moose along the loop. Bring binoculars and keep a respectful distance from all wildlife.

Essentials and Services

This is a backcountry setting: no reservations, no store, no food service, and no potable water—plan to filter or treat lake water. The campground is first-come and primitive, reinforcing the lake’s quiet character.

Conditions to Expect

Mosquitoes can be fierce in summer, especially around wetlands. Weather changes quickly and can make trails muddy. Overgrown stretches can slow travel; long sleeves and pants help with brush and bugs.

Best Time to Visit

Sunrise and sunset bring soft light for photography and better wildlife activity. Thanks to its remoteness, crowds are typically light all season. For color and calmer air, evening light at nearby Rainbow Cove is a standout.
