Feldtmann Ridge Trail

Overview

This is Isle Royale’s big, lonely ridge walk—10.3 miles point‑to‑point between Feldtmann Lake Campground and Siskiwit Bay Campground on the park’s southwest side. Most hikers tackle it as the centerpiece of the ~30‑mile Feldtmann Loop out of the Windigo area. It’s the loop’s longest day, exposed in places, and famously dry—plan like your day depends on it, because it does.

What You’ll See

A 1930s forest fire left the ridge unusually open, so you get frequent, sweeping views over Lake Superior, the island’s interior, and long ribbons of spruce and pine. About halfway along, a short spur leads to the old Feldtmann fire tower—climb it for the best panoramas on the loop. The tread alternates between airy crest, patches of dense forest, beaver ponds, and rocky outcrops. The south side of the ridge rolls gently; the north drops away more steeply, with stately white pines. Keep an eye out for moose sign around wetlands and quiet stretches, and watch the sky for birdlife.

Trail Experience

Expect a full day. The route is generally well‑marked but can be lightly overgrown—long pants help with brush and wet vegetation. Elevation undulates from roughly 650 to 1,100 feet without any brutal single climb, but the exposure to sun and wind adds up. There are no reliable water sources on the ridge; you’ll need to carry what you need between campgrounds. Bugs (mosquitoes and black flies) can be a factor early summer.

Best Time to Hike

Late spring through early fall (June–September) is the sweet spot. Early summer can be muddy and buggy; late summer into early fall usually means fewer insects, clearer views, and more comfortable temperatures. Start early for cooler temps, softer light, and to give yourself margin on the loop’s longest segment.

Tips and Tricks

• Carry all your water for the ridge and start hiking in the morning.
• Climb the Feldtmann fire tower—bring a camera or binoculars.
• Long sleeves/pants and bug protection make the brush and insects more tolerable.
• If you want quiet, this ridge is notably less trafficked than busier east‑end routes.

Absolutely—if you’re self‑sufficient and like your views earned. The combination of big lake vistas, true solitude, and that climbable fire tower makes this one of Isle Royale’s standout days. If you dislike exposure, brushy trail, or carrying extra water, pick another segment of the loop.
