Beaver Island Campground

Overview

Beaver Island Campground sits on a small island in Washington Harbor, just off the Windigo side of the park’s southwest end. It’s boat-in only—paddle or motor over—and you’re rewarded with big-water scenery and a surprisingly peaceful vibe for being so close to Windigo.

Why go

If you want that Isle Royale wilderness feel without committing to a long portage or multi-day trek, this is a sweet spot. The views sweep toward Rock of Ages and across the harbor; on clear days you can pick out distant islands and even a hint of Canada. It’s a favorite staging point for paddlers and boaters exploring the west end.

What to expect

This is a true backcountry campground: an outhouse, designated campsites, and not much else. There’s no potable water—plan to bring your own or filter from the lake. No campfires or pets. Expect quiet nights, the lap of Lake Superior, and stars when clouds cooperate. Around midday it can feel briefly busier as boats swing by for drop-offs/pick-ups, but evenings settle down fast.

Access & logistics

• Boat, canoe, or kayak access only; there are no roads or trails to the island.
• First-come, first-served sites. Arrive earlier in the day if you’re targeting a specific spot.
• Stay limits apply in peak season (early summer through Labor Day). Pack in all food, fuel, and gear; pack everything out.
• Plan for wind and quick weather shifts—Lake Superior makes its own rules.

Best time to visit

• Summer is the main season; plan for calmer mornings and evenings.
• Midday sees the most boater traffic. If you value solitude, time arrivals for early or late.
• Golden-hour light across Washington Harbor makes sunrise and sunset the best for photos and glassy paddles.

Wildlife

While sightings vary by day, the broader area is classic Isle Royale habitat: moose and fox are the headline acts, with plenty of birdlife working the shoreline and harbor. Keep food secured and give any wildlife ample space.
