Grace Creek Overlook Trail

Grace Creek Overlook is a 3.6-mile round-trip out-and-back from Windigo to a rocky ridge above Grace Harbor. Follow Feldtmann Lake Trail about 1.8 miles each way to the signed overlook spur, then retrace the same route. Plan on about 3 hours; the expected range is 2 to 4. The rocky climb makes this a moderate half-day walk and a good way to reach an island-interior view without taking on an overnight route.

Start by the dock at the Feldtmann Lake Trail post. The path follows Washington Harbor's shoreline, then turns inland through boreal and mature hardwood forest. The unpaved tread is narrow, about 18 inches wide, and covered with rocks and roots; it steepens as you climb. At the ridge, take the signed spur to the rocky outcrop. The approach and return use the same corridor, so leave enough daylight and boat time to walk back.

The overlook opens onto Grace Creek, Grace Harbor, Lake Superior and the island interior. The change from enclosed forest to the ridge is a big part of the payoff. Windigo is reached by ferry, seaplane or private boat; vehicles stay on the mainland. Isle Royale closes to visitors from November 1 through April 15, and public ferry and seaplane service generally runs from mid-May through September. Check the transport schedule and allow 2 to 4 hours for the hike. Windigo has seasonal potable water and a store nearby, but no on-route water source is confirmed, so carry what you need. The hike has no separate activity fee or reservation requirement, though the park entrance fee applies. Pets are not allowed on the island; service dogs need a park permit arranged before the trip.
