Guide
Feldtmann Lake Campground is an inland backcountry camp on the shore of Feldtmann Lake, near Isle Royale's southwest end. It is reached on foot from the Feldtmann Lake and Feldtmann Ridge trails. From Windigo, the Feldtmann Lake Trail is about 8.5 miles; this is the first overnight on the suggested four-night Feldtmann Loop, which runs about 30 miles including campground spurs.
A 0.8-mile access trail leads from camp to Rainbow Cove, a rocky Lake Superior beach. On a clear day, you can see Rock of Ages Lighthouse and Minnesota's shoreline from the cove. It's a good way to trade the inland lake for a stretch of open Superior shore.
The campground has tent sites, a water source and outhouses. Drinking water needs to be collected and treated. Park services are limited, so carry the food and supplies you'll need for a remote backcountry stop.
The trail from Windigo crosses rocks left by an earlier Lake Superior shoreline, then descends through woods toward Feldtmann Lake. It gives the long approach a little geological context before the remote inland stretch at camp.
