Feldtmann Lake Campground

Overview

Set on the shoreline of Feldtmann Lake on the island’s southwest side, this is an inland, hike-in backcountry campground that feels blissfully removed from Isle Royale’s busier hubs. You reach it via the Feldtmann Lake and Feldtmann Ridge Trails, and it anchors the classic Feldtmann Loop itinerary as the end of Section 1 from Windigo and the start of Section 2 toward Siskiwit Bay.

Why Go

Camp right on a tranquil inland lake, then take the short 0.8-mile side trip to Rainbow Cove. There you’ll swap quiet inland water for a rocky Lake Superior shoreline—prime for sunset color and, on clear days, distant peeks of the Rock of Ages Lighthouse. It’s a simple, high-reward add-on once your tent is pitched.

What to Expect

Amenities are minimalist and squarely backcountry: a pit toilet and lake access for water (treat/filter before drinking). There’s no road access, parking, or services—everything comes in on your back. Sites are first-come, first-served, and this is a common planned overnight for loop backpackers, so plan your day to arrive with some buffer.

Wildlife

This corner of the island is classic Isle Royale habitat. Backpackers frequently talk about moose browsing near wetlands, the eerie calls of loons at dusk, and beaver activity on the lake. Bald eagles and ospreys patrol overhead; wolves are present on the island but are rarely seen. Keep a respectful distance from all wildlife and store food securely.
