Windigo Store & Marina

Overview

A two-minute walk up from the Windigo ferry dock, Windigo Store & Marina is the west end’s all-in-one resupply and unwind spot. It’s small but mighty: basic groceries, hot frozen pizzas in the afternoon, cold drinks (including Michigan craft brews), and a deck that looks straight out over Washington Harbor.

What It Offers

• Store: shelf-stable groceries, snacks, some fresh items, souvenirs, basic hygiene, stove fuel, and a few essentials for camp and fishing.
• Light food: hot frozen pizzas, pre-made sandwiches, and breakfast sandwiches.
• Marina: gasoline and diesel for boats, pump-out service, plus rentals (motorboats, canoes, and kayaks) for exploring Washington Harbor.
• Showers & laundry: tokens and towel rentals are handled at the store, making it an easy reset after days on trail.
• Nearby: Windigo Visitor Center for permits/orientation and the Washington Creek Campground just a short walk away.

Why It’s Useful

This is one of only two general stores on the island. If you forgot something, need a morale-boosting hot slice, or want to top off fuel and grab a rental to poke around the harbor, this is the place. It’s also a nice finish-line vibe for those ending a long cross-island trek.

Wildlife & Setting

The deck overlooks calm, spruce-framed Washington Harbor—great for kicking back and watching boats come and go. Moose are seen in the Windigo area, and birdlife is active around the water and shorelines.

For Boaters

Expect on-island realities: fuel and pump-out are available, but supplies can fluctuate. Rentals include small motorboats and human-powered craft; fishing licenses are available at the store. Standard boating permits/fees and stay limits apply, including a consecutive stay cap during peak season.

How It Can Fall Short

Selection is limited and depends on shipments, so favorites vanish fast in mid-summer and late season. Prices reflect the logistics of stocking a remote island.

• For hot food: afternoons are your window for pizza.
• For crowds: expect a rush around ferry arrivals and late afternoons when hikers drift in.
• For mellow views: early evening on the deck is wonderfully low-key.
