Windigo Visitor Center

Windigo Visitor Center is Isle Royale’s information and backcountry-permit stop at the southwest end of the island, on Washington Harbor. Come for the exhibits, a backcountry permit, the ranger-program schedule, and help with trip-planning questions. It’s a useful first stop before choosing a walk. The center is seasonal, so check its hours before building a visit around it.

Windigo is reached by boat or seaplane; there’s no road access. A Sea Hunter III day trip from Grand Portage typically gives you about four hours ashore, though its timetable varies through the season. The Windigo Nature Trail takes about 1–2 hours; Grace Creek Overlook is a 2–4-hour outing. If time is tight, choose one before you arrive rather than trying to fit both.

Lake Superior weather or transport trouble can turn a day trip into an overnight. Bring essential medication, food, and extra clothing even if you expect to return the same day.

The seasonal Washington Harbor Store is close by. The wider Windigo area also has seasonal showers, laundry, potable water, boat fuel, and pump-out service. These are Windigo-area facilities, not all services inside the visitor center itself; check availability if you’re visiting outside the main summer season.

The center displays the old Second Order Fresnel lens from Rock of Ages Lighthouse. The lighthouse began operating in 1908, and its second-order lens went into service in 1909, replacing a temporary light. The large glass optic is a memorable thing to look for after arriving at the harbor.

Windigo had Isle Royale’s last serious copper-mining push. Around 1890–1892, the Wendigo Copper Company, led by Jacob Houghton, worked an 8,000-acre claim about 2 km northeast of present Windigo. The nearby townsite of Ghyllbank had about 135 residents before the miners left in 1892.

The bedrock here includes ancient lava flows, among them the locally named Washington Island and Grace Island flows. Glacial till and glacial landforms are especially prominent at Isle Royale’s southwest end, so the terrain around Windigo carries both a volcanic and an ice-shaped story.
