Grace Creek Overlook

Grace Creek Overlook is a rocky outcrop on a spur of the Feldtmann Lake Trail, reached from Windigo on Isle Royale's west end. The payoff is a look down into a creek valley and out toward Lake Superior. It's 1.8 miles each way (3.6 miles round trip); allow two to four hours for the outing. Come for a quiet, rocky view, not a drive-up stop.

Start southwest of Windigo Marina near the Seaplane Dock Trailhead, then follow Feldtmann Lake Trail until a sign points to the overlook spur. The unpaved path is narrow, rocky and rooty, and it steepens after turning inland. Wear shoes with grip and carry the water and food you need. Dogs aren't allowed on this hike.

The overlook is a rocky ledge above Grace Creek. Look southwest for Grace Beach, Grace Harbor and Lake Superior; the surrounding forest and Red Oak Ridge fill out the wider view. Wildlife viewing is common here, though no particular species is a sure thing. For a photo, keep some of the rocky, brushy foreground in frame so the valley doesn't flatten into a distant tree line.

This is a remote trail stop, so sort out supplies and a restroom break in Windigo before you start. Its public restrooms, drinking water and Washington Harbor Store are seasonal; take what you need rather than counting on supplies along the trail.
