Pros & cons
PROS
- Sweeping views of Grace Harbor and Lake Superior
- Short, rewarding hike from Windigo
CONS
- No services or amenities at the overlook
- Rocky outcrop and uneven, rooty trail underfoot
Overview
Grace Creek Overlook is a rocky perch above Grace Creek on the west end of the island, reached from the Feldtmann Lake Trail. It’s the classic quick payoff near Windigo: step out onto bedrock and you can scan the creek below and, to the southwest, pick out Grace Beach, Grace Harbor, and the big blue sweep of Lake Superior.
Getting There
From Windigo, it’s about 1.8 miles along the Feldtmann Lake Trail to reach the spur and rocky outcrop, making this roughly a 3.6‑mile round trip. Expect a generally moderate walk with sections of rocks and roots. The overlook is along-trail—there’s no road access and no parking here.
What You’ll See
- Immediate foreground: Grace Creek flowing below the rock ledge.
- Distant vistas: To the southwest, views stretch across Grace Beach, Grace Harbor, and Lake Superior.
- Landscape character: Classic Isle Royale bedrock, ridge walking, and mixed forest open-ups that deliver those views.
Wildlife
This is a good spot to pause and scan—wildlife sightings are possible from the overlook. Moose are a hope for many hikers on this side of the island, though sightings aren’t guaranteed.
The Experience
Popular by Isle Royale standards, yet it still feels quiet compared to most national park viewpoints. It’s an easy half‑day add-on for anyone based around Windigo who wants a big view without committing to a long backcountry push.
Amenities and Preparation
There are no amenities at the overlook—no restrooms, water, tables, or shelters. Treat this as a backcountry stop: bring water and snacks, wear sturdy footwear for the rocky, rooty tread, and carry a map for the trail network around Windigo and Feldtmann.
Best Time to Visit
Aim for clear weather to maximize distant views. The sightlines run to the southwest, so mid to late day light often works well for picking out Grace Harbor and the broader expanse of Lake Superior. Weekday mornings tend to be quieter, but crowds are rarely an issue here.
If You’re Continuing
The Feldtmann Lake Trail carries on along the ridge beyond the overlook and later descends toward Grace Creek; expect small, loose rocks on the tread after passing the creek.
