Overview

Tucked along a quiet bend of Washington Creek just beyond Windigo, Washington Creek Campground is the most convenient place to drop your pack on the island’s west end. It feels wild—creek murmuring, misty mornings, and moose browsing the banks—yet you’re a short stroll from Windigo’s services.

Why Camp Here

This is the west‑end basecamp: you can arrive and depart from the same spot via Windigo, and step onto big routes like the Feldtmann Lake, Minong, and Greenstone Ridge Trails. If you want wildlife watching and easy logistics, it’s hard to beat.

Sites and Shelters

Expect a mix of tent sites and 10 first‑come lean‑to shelters, many set right on the creek for prime wildlife viewing. During the busy season, plan to arrive early off the boat—shelters are the hot ticket and go fast. A common practice limit is three consecutive nights here in peak season.

Facilities

This is a rustic, walk‑in campground. You’ll find pit/composting privies, but no showers or campfires. Potable water is seasonal; when taps are off, treat or filter. Modern restrooms, showers, and a small store are a short walk away in Windigo. No pets.

Wildlife

Moose are the headliners. Dawn and dusk are your best windows, and many campers spot them right from the shelters as they wade and feed along the creek. Foxes are around too—stow your gear and food or they’ll make off with it.

Vibe and Crowds

Being close to Windigo makes this lively by Isle Royale standards. Interior sites see steady foot traffic in peak months, but the creekside setting stays peaceful once you settle in. It’s a popular first or last night for backpackers finishing the island.

Getting There

From the Windigo dock, it’s a short, easy walk (roughly a third to half a mile) to the campground. Access is by ferry or seaplane to Windigo, or on foot via the island’s long‑distance trails.

Stewardship Notes

Follow the park’s low‑impact guidance: if you use soap, move at least 100 feet from water and campsites to wash and rinse, and use it sparingly. Fires are not allowed—bring a stove.

• Wildlife and photography: early morning and late evening for moose and soft light over the creek.
