Washington Creek Campground is Isle Royale’s backcountry campground at Windigo, tucked beside the creek on the island’s southwest end. It has 10 shelters, five individual tent sites and group sites, with the Feldtmann Lake, Minong and Greenstone Ridge trails nearby. It makes a useful first or last camp when you’re coming through Windigo, and a quieter base before heading farther across the island.
There are four food-storage lockers and at least one outhouse. There’s no fire ring or grill, and cooking is limited to self-contained stoves. Windigo’s visitor center, comfort station and seasonal store are nearby; seasonal potable water, showers and laundry are in Windigo too, rather than services to count on at your campsite.
The creek is more than scenery here: moose sometimes wade or feed along its banks, and campers often spot them around dawn or evening. Keep a quiet look while you’re around camp, but treat a sighting as a lucky extra, not a sure thing.
The campground has rough, uneven ground and its facilities aren’t wheelchair accessible. Some roads and services in Windigo are accessible, but that doesn’t extend to the campground itself.
