Overview
About Gungarre Walk
Gungarre Walk, also signed Kungarre Walk, is an easy 3.9 km circular walk in Kakadu's South Alligator region. Starting at the large banyan fig tree near the former Aurora Kakadu Resort, the loop passes through monsoon forest and open woodland before following the margins of Ankurdabbal Billabong. The billabong boardwalk is a highlight for photographs and birdwatching, with opportunities to see jacanas, jabirus, eagles, rainbow pittas and orange-footed scrubfowl. Parks Australia rates the walk Grade 2 and allows about 2 hours. A shorter 1.4 km return option reaches the boardwalk and returns.
Expect a mostly easy bush track with some boardwalk and uneven natural surfaces. Access is seasonal and conditions can change around the wetland; check the current Kakadu access report before setting out. The route is flat overall, but wet-season mud, standing water and mosquitoes are possible. Stay Crocwise near the billabong and never approach or enter the water.
