About Kungarre Walk
Kungarre Walk (also signed Gungarre Walk) is a gentle loop from the large banyan near Aurora Kakadu Resort through monsoon forest and open woodland to the margins and boardwalk at Ankurdabbal Billabong. Parks Australia lists the circuit at 3.6 km; a detailed independent trace of the complete Aurora-start loop measures about 3.9 km (2.4 miles), so allow about 2 hours including time at the boardwalk. A separate 1.4 km return option goes from the start to the boardwalk and back.
Most of the walk is flat, with natural track and boardwalk sections and only small undulations. The billabong is the highlight for photographs and birdwatching; rainbow pittas, orange-footed scrubfowl, fantails, finches, jabirus, eagles and comb-crested jacanas may be seen.
Use the signed car park at or beside Aurora Kakadu Resort and follow the Kungarre/Pontoon Walk entrance by the banyan; toilets are available at the start. Carry water and sun protection for the more exposed woodland and billabong edges. Stay on marked tracks and boardwalks around waterways because crocodiles may be present, and check Kakadu's access report before setting out because high water or wildlife can temporarily close the site.
