Knox Lookout

Knox Lookout is a built viewpoint at the meeting of Knox and Wittenoom gorges. Its cantilevered steel deck reaches over the rim for a broad view of the red walls and their sharp bend. The accessible approach is an easy 200 m return walk on a raised boardwalk, about 15 minutes; it gives you the gorge's scale without taking on the rough trail below.

The Knox Gorge Trail is a separate 2 km descent into the gorge. It's challenging, with rocky scrambling on the way down and pools below. If you mainly want the view, the deck is enough; choose the trail only if you're comfortable with a much rougher outing. The gorge walls rise about 100 m, and flash floods can occur, so stay back from the edge and keep out of the gorge when rain threatens.

From above, you can follow Knox Gorge to the point where it meets Wittenoom Gorge and see the far wall turn around the bend. The layered red cliffs are part of a landscape whose exposed rocks reveal about 2.5 billion years of geological history. This short walk makes that depth easy to take in.

Early morning or late afternoon brings slanting light across the rock, picking out its color and texture. For a phone photo, use a wide view from the deck to keep the gorge junction and curved wall together; leave a little of the rim in the foreground to show the drop.
