“You're nearing Weano and Hancock gorges, where the routes to Kermit's Pool and Handrail Pool involve demanding scrambling. For Hancock, allow about two hours and go only if you're fit and experienced on wet rock.”

Hiking Upper Weano Gorge

Upper Weano Gorge is a short Class 4 loop from the Weano Recreation Area into a narrow gorge, down to a pool beneath banded-iron walls and back up by steps. Allow at least 45 minutes. The loop traced through the mapped paths measures about 1 mile. DBCA’s March 2026 visitor guide lists 1 km return and says to return at the steps; a regional description includes climbing out to make a loop. The signed variant is unclear, so check the car-park sign and treat 1 mile as the mapped loop distance.

Down to the pool, then outFrom the car park, head north along the formed track before dropping into the gorge.

From the car park, head north along the formed track before dropping into the gorge. Expect rough, uneven rock, short steep sections, stream crossings and a long flight of steps on the climb out. The pool and the narrow red walls are the payoff. This is the upper walk; Lower Weano and Handrail Pool are a separate, more difficult route.

Banded iron and cold waterThe gorge walls expose tiers of banded iron formation above the creek.

The gorge walls expose tiers of banded iron formation above the creek. The pool sits under those high rock layers, with pale gum trees along the water. Karijini’s gorge pools can be extremely cold, especially from April through September; the park advises against jumping or diving.
