Knox Gorge Lookout Walk is a short out-and-back from Knox Gorge Carpark to a railed platform at the rim. The mapped corridor is about 133 metres one way, or roughly 270 metres (0.17 miles) return; allow around 15 minutes. Published distances range from 200 to 800 metres, so check the current route signs if exact mileage matters. The path includes steps and stays above the gorge rather than dropping to its pools.

The viewA short flight of steps brings you to a railed deck above a gorge drop of about 100 metres.

A short flight of steps brings you to a railed deck above a gorge drop of about 100 metres. Knox Gorge meets Wittenoom Gorge just beyond the platform, and the far wall curves around a river bend. Look for the banded rock in the walls and the green growth tucked below. From the deck, the curve in the far wall makes a strong photo; angled morning or late-afternoon light brings out the rock texture.

Ancient rock, water-carved wallsThe gorge walls expose banded iron formations more than 2.5 billion years old.

The gorge walls expose banded iron formations more than 2.5 billion years old. Iron- and silica-rich sediments settled on an ancient sea floor, hardened under pressure, then rivers cut deep channels through the uplifted rock over millions of years. From this short walk, you can see two gorge lines meeting in the same view.

This is a brief lookout stop; the separate two-kilometre Knox Gorge Trail descends to the pools and is a strenuous, rocky hike. Summer temperatures often exceed 40°C, so choose a cooler part of the day.
