“At a quiet pond or stream edge, look for insects skating across the surface on long, thin legs. Those are water striders. Tiny hairs on their legs repel water and trap air.”

Princess Campground is a developed Forest Service campground in Indian Basin Grove, off Highway 180 about 12 miles past Grant Grove and roughly 3 miles northwest of Hume Lake. It sits at about 5,900 feet beside a meadow and creek, outside Kings Canyon National Park proper. This is a useful summer base for the approach, not a campground inside the canyon; reserve ahead because it often fills during the season.

Campsites are split among Shining Cloud, Yellow Moon, and Morning Star loops. Potable water, picnic tables and vault toilets are available, and there’s an RV dump station. Plan to bring meals; food service isn’t listed for the campground. Campfire permits are required for campfires, barbecues and camp stoves, and use animal-safe food storage.

The paved, accessible Indian Basin Grove interpretive loop starts just outside the entrance and is about half a mile; a further half-mile extension continues through the grove and meadow. It’s an easy walk to add without driving to another trailhead.

Large old sequoia stumps stand among younger sequoias and other conifers. Indian Basin Meadow and Creek are right beside camp, with wildflowers in the meadow. That’s the distinctive setting here: forest and meadow, with a grove walk built into the overnight stop.
