Hiking Florence Lake to McClure Meadow

The route and its turnaroundThis is a multi-day out-and-back from Florence Lake Trailhead to McClure Meadow in Evolution…

This is a multi-day out-and-back from Florence Lake Trailhead to McClure Meadow in Evolution Valley, combining the Florence Lake Trail with a stretch of the John Muir Trail. The mapped route runs about 18.87 miles one way; the visitor distance is 37.7 miles round trip, including the full lakeshore approach on foot. Allow roughly three to four days and about 28 hours of walking; that is a planning estimate, not a published itinerary. The route ends at McClure Meadow. Continuing farther into Evolution Valley adds miles and is outside this record.

Around Florence LakeThe opening leg follows exposed rocky shoreline around Florence Lake.

The opening leg follows exposed rocky shoreline around Florence Lake. The full walking route reaches the Ferry Trail junction after about 4.3 miles, and the first four miles have little water available along the trail. A seasonal boat taxi across the lake can bypass roughly four miles of walking each way. That changes the start of the hike and shortens the trip; the ferry crossing is not part of the saved line or distance. Check current ferry operation if you plan to use it.

Creek and river crossingsNear the south end of the lake, the route crosses Boulder Creek and the South Fork San Joaquin…

Near the south end of the lake, the route crosses Boulder Creek and the South Fork San Joaquin River before continuing toward the JMT. The river crossing has a bridge. Boulder Creek can be difficult during early snowmelt, and water levels vary, so do not treat an old crossing report as a forecast. The low-water stretch at the lake is another reason to plan water before leaving the trailhead.

Beyond the lake approach, the route climbs overall into higher Sierra country, rising from about 7,400 feet near the start to roughly 9,700 feet at McClure Meadow. The trail follows the river and creek corridor toward the valley, then reaches a broad meadow with a winding stream, pine margins and granite peaks. The meadow is the destination and natural photo stop; it is not a short spur from the lakeshore.

What to expectThis is a long, remote backpack, not a day hike.

This is a long, remote backpack, not a day hike. Some trip totals are shorter because they start at the far side of the lake after a boat crossing; others give longer totals without a clearly matching turnaround. The mapped version counts the complete foot approach from the road-end access and stops at McClure Meadow. Use the route line when comparing plans rather than assuming every mileage figure describes the same itinerary. The Forest Service also notes birds of prey perching in Jeffrey pine snags along the lake approach.

Overnight travel requires a wilderness permit, and reservations are required during the quota period. Check the current entry rules and trail conditions before setting out. Ordinary pets are prohibited on park trails. The Forest Service describes the route as generally accessible from June through October when snow conditions permit, but snow and stream crossings can change the usable season from year to year.
