Floe Lake Campground

Floe Lake Campground is a reserved backcountry campground on the shore of Floe Lake and the southernmost access point for the Rockwall route. It is a big commitment: from Floe Lake parking lot, 72 km east of Radium Hot Springs, the trail climbs 10.8 km one way with 1,120 m of elevation gain. Allow about seven hours for a return day hike or plan on two days for an overnight trip. If Floe Lake is your goal, camping gives you time to enjoy the setting instead of turning straight around.

Reserve a backcountry permit and campsite. Campers must use the designated tent pads, and stays are limited to three consecutive nights. The campground has dry toilets, communal picnic tables, and food-storage cables or lockers. Fires are prohibited. A potable water supply isn't identified, so confirm before relying on a source. Higher trail sections are generally snowbound into early or mid-July, and autumn snow can make hiking difficult in late September or October; check trail conditions before setting out.

The 54.1 km Rockwall route usually takes three to five days, crossing three alpine passes through subalpine meadows and past hanging glaciers. Its limestone escarpment rises more than 900 m above the trail in places. Floe Lake is the route's southern lakeside campground, so it works as either the destination for a demanding out-and-back or a night on the longer traverse.
