Numa Falls

Numa Falls is a roadside waterfall on the Vermilion River, where the water cuts through a narrow limestone gorge. From the small lot just off Highway 93, the walk to the bridge takes only a few minutes. I’d stop if you’re already driving through Kootenay: it’s an easy leg-stretcher with fast water close below you, though the falls are modest in height and don’t need a long visit.

The bridge crosses over the gorge and gives you a close view of the rushing water. For a photo, frame the cascade between the sculpted rock walls; spray can make a rainbow when sunlight catches it. Keep to the bridge and the short approach rather than scrambling onto the canyon-side rocks, where footing can be slick above fast water.

The current has cut curves and pothole-like hollows into the limestone around the falls. Look along the rock beside the drop as well as at the water itself: the smooth, sculpted channel is part of what makes this compact stop interesting.

Picnic tables make this a handy packed-lunch stop. The parking area is small, so it works best as a brief leg-stretch when the lot has room. Restrooms are reported at the site, but their type and current availability aren’t clear, so don’t count on one without checking.

Snowmelt can increase the flow, and sunny conditions may catch the spray in a rainbow. Neither is guaranteed, but both can make the gorge feel more alive than the modest drop alone suggests.
