Maroela Satellite Camp is a small, rustic, camping-only base set along the Timbavati River, about 3 km from the Orpen Gate. It’s one of just two camps in the park that cater exclusively to tents, caravans and campers—no bungalows or huts—so the vibe is quiet, communal and very much about the bush.
Expect a compact camp with roughly twenty powered stands (max six people per site). Facilities are deliberately simple: a communal kitchen, shared fridge/freezer, and a single ablution block with hot water. There’s no reception, shop, restaurant, ATM, laundry, or WiFi at Maroela; you’ll check in, stock up, and refuel at nearby Orpen. A boma/braai area is available at Tamboti just down the road. Generators are permitted from one hour after sunrise to one hour before sunset.
Maroela overlooks the Timbavati riverbed and has a small waterhole by the fence, plus a rustic viewing platform—perfect for armchair game viewing between drives. It’s common to hear lions at night, with hyenas often patrolling the fence; sightings in the surrounding area regularly include elephant, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, cheetah and lion, and the river corridor is known for leopard. Birding is excellent, including along the internal perimeter walking route.
All guided activities run from Orpen: sunrise/sunset game drives, night drives for nocturnal species, and guided bush walks (small groups). Book these at Orpen reception. Note that Maroela does not allow day visitors—this keeps it serene for overnight campers.
This is self‑catering: pack all your camping gear plus cookware, crockery, cutlery and braai tools. Bring food, water, ice and firewood/charcoal (you can restock at Orpen). A headlamp, extension leads, insect repellent and sun protection are smart adds; secure food from scavengers.
Winter is prime for sightings as animals concentrate at water sources and vegetation thins out. Early spring and late autumn offer the most comfortable camping weather. In summer, arrive early to claim a shaded site and plan midday breaks at Orpen if you need a pool or extra supplies.
